Take Back the Hill - Mother/Son Adventure Race

Take Back the Hill is an action packed adventure race that begins and ends at Northview Church on May 11th. The race is for boys in grades 7th-12th and their moms. During this team adventure race you should be prepared to bike 5 miles and hike another 2 miles. As the race begins, each mother/son team will receive a map with checkpoints that each team must find along the course. At each checkpoint we will provide a new challenge or trivia question that focuses on gender differences. The highlight of our event will be after lunch – a pitch-in at North Beach - when each mom is given the opportunity to privately share with their son the importance of treating women with respect. We are so excited to partner with the moms of our students at Northview as they take back an important hill in our society – words and actions toward girls do matter. Please join us for a fun, wild, exciting, and action packed event that will start some great conversations between you and your son!

Racing Basics

Adventure racing is fun for people at all levels of fitness. The course will be challenging for those that want a challenge, but it will also be fun for those that just want to get out and spend time together.

You will be running or trekking approximately 2 miles and riding 5. Unless noted otherwise, you will stay together the entire race. You will not know when or where you’ll be running or riding until the morning of the race. At packet pick-up, we will give you pre-marked maps with detailed instructions showing you where you’ll need to go. You will receive a “passport” in your race packet. You will need to carry that passport with you the entire race. You will use it to record answers to questions, or to obtain signatures from volunteers at each of the activities or challenges (we call them checkpoints or CP’s) throughout the race. It is very important that you keep it, and your maps dry.

The object of the day will be to get as many of the CP’s in the shortest time permitted.

Gear List

We are working diligently to ensure this is a fun, safe, and affordable adventure for you. There will be a few things that you will need to bring with you and have on you in order to participate. Please see the list below. The gear list is subject to change up to race day. We will communicate any changes so you have as much time to prepare as possible. Unless specifically noted below, every racer will be required to have or wear the following while competing in that section:

Bike section(s):

  • Bike – mountain bike is preferred, but hybrid and road bikes will be accepted.
  • Helmet – ANSI approved helmet properly fitted and worn at all times while on your bike.
  • Gloves – recommended but not required while riding. (You may need gloves for some of the special challenges. If you don’t have any gloves, we can provide those for you.)
  • Bike shoes with clipless pedals are acceptable, but you may need to run/trek while on a bike leg, so you may be on your feet running in them. If you can run in them great, if you cannot, you will need to carry proper running shoes with you during a bike leg. (Running shoes will be fine)

Running / Trekking section(s):

  • Hydration system – ability to carry at least 24 oz of water with you at all times. A backpack with hydration bladder is preferred. Waist packs with bottle carriers will work. Carrying bike bottles is acceptable – maybe not as convenient for you though. (An easy solution is to have one team member wear a backpack with a couple water bottles in it.)
  • Comfortable shoes for both running and riding would be preferred. They may get wet and dirty, so please plan accordingly.
  • Cell phone (one per team) – It must be a working mobile phone. We highly recommend you get a water proof protective case to carry it in. (A smaller Ziploc bag will work just fine. Don’t panic… you won’t get crazy wet, unless we have a monsoon that day, and we will have Ziploc bags available if you don’t have anything.)

Recommended gear:

  • Dress appropriately for the weather that day. Barring any lightning, we will race rain or shine.  In case of inclement weather, you may need a jacket or sunscreen if it is a bright sunny day. Plan accordingly!
